The White House disclosed the start of federal worker layoffs on Friday, making good on earlier warnings linked to the ongoing US government shutdown, which is now poised to stretch into its third straight week.
Russell Vought posted on a public platform that “RIFs have begun,” indicating the official process for terminating staff.
Although Vought provided no details on which agencies were impacted, a treasury spokesperson confirmed that notices had been distributed within that department. Furthermore, a DHS representative noted that staff reductions would also occur at the CISA. Also, a union representing federal workers announced that members at the Department of Education would be impacted by the reduction in force.
Labor representatives warned that the terminations would have “severe consequences” on public services used by millions of Americans and vowed to contest the actions in the legal system.
This is shameful that the government has used the government shutdown as an excuse to illegally fire numerous employees who provide essential functions to the public nationwide,” stated a national union president, representing the AFGE.
The AFL-CIO reacted to the news, declaring, “Labor organizations will see you in court.”
Lawmakers from the Democratic party have refused to vote for a GOP-supported bill to reopen the government unless it contains healthcare-centered concessions. After repeated failed attempts, the Senate’s Republican leaders have adjourned the Senate until the following week, meaning the standoff is not expected to be resolved before then.
During a media briefing, the GOP leader in the House, the speaker, criticized Senate Democrats for not supporting the Republican bill, which passed in the lower chamber on a near party-line vote.
“This is the last paycheck that 700,000 federal workers will see until opposition leaders decide to fulfill their duties and end the shutdown,” the speaker said. Beginning shortly, military personnel, many of whom live paycheck to paycheck, are going to miss a full paycheck.”
Previously, unions sought a temporary restraining order to block the administration from implementing any layoffs during the shutdown. Additionally, a court official directed the government to provide specifics on termination strategies, impacted departments, and if any government staff had been recalled to execute layoffs.
An analysis contended that a government shutdown restricts the ability of the administration to carry out firings, referencing guidance that acknowledged any long-term staff cuts need to have been started prior to the shutdown began.
These terminations took place on the same day that federal workers got only a incomplete payment for the end of September but excluding the beginning of the current month, since appropriations lapsed at the beginning of the period.
A public service advocate, the president of the non-profit Partnership for Public Service, condemned the political stalemate’s effect on federal employees.
“It is wrong to make government staff bear the burden because our leaders in Congress and the White House have not succeeded to keep our federal operations open and operational,” Stier said. The flight regulators, VA nurses, smoke jumpers and safety officials are not at fault for this government shutdown.”
The irony is that lawmakers and top administration officials are still receiving salaries during the funding gap.
